Accountants for contractors & consultants

Make the current contract work for life beyond it. COPA helps independent specialists stay on top of accounts and tax, with senior-team discussions about rates, quieter weeks and taking on help using your existing figures.

Does my day rate cover the unpaid days? Holidays, admin, training and time finding work don't generate invoices. A strong daily rate can still leave a thin annual income. Discuss billable days, business costs and income goals using your existing figures. Future work is not guaranteed.

What if the next contract starts late? Insurance, software and tax bills continue between engagements. An unpaid invoice won't cover a bill due today. Talk through unpaid fees, regular costs and cash set aside with our senior team. Consider a longer gap before deciding what to draw.

Would a limited company actually suit me? A company brings different filing, tax and administration costs. Your job title or day rate doesn't decide the answer. Discuss income, client arrangements and personal plans. Incorporation is not automatically better; sole-trader and company obligations differ.

Does a new engagement change my status? A new client or working arrangement may raise IR35, off-payroll or VAT questions. The last contract's position may not carry over. Raise the facts and parties involved early. Employment-status assessments and specialist advice need separately agreed scope.

Can I afford to bring in another specialist? An associate may need paying before your client settles. A bigger fee can also bring more responsibility. Discuss delivery costs, payment terms and any payroll needs using existing records. Employment and specialist requirements must be checked.

Compliance, understood well before deadlines Keep the accounts and tax returns relevant to your structure on track, with VAT and payroll where needed. Understand what to file, pay and set aside before deadlines.

Tax efficiency: pay no more than you need to Review allowable expenses, VAT treatment and recovery, and tax-efficient remuneration. Minimise Corporation Tax for limited companies and relevant personal taxes for sole traders within the rules.

Business strategy: scale and prepare to sell Discuss rates, contract gaps and taking on help with our senior team, using your existing figures. If you want to build a consultancy to scale or sell, talk through what needs to change.

Systems & automation: connect your financials Connect invoicing, expenses and bank feeds with your bookkeeping. Automate routine entries where supported so less time goes on admin and your business finances stay visible.

Start with how you work. Tell us your structure, current engagement and what you want to change.

Look at what's already in place. Discuss invoices, expenses, tax provision and accounting tools. Bring relevant contract terms if your question concerns an engagement.

Agree the support and fee. Confirm the returns, bookkeeping and advice you need. Status reviews and specialist work are scoped separately.

Discuss life beyond this contract. Use existing figures to talk through rates, contract gaps and growth with our senior team. These discussions don't include custom reports or promise future income.

For IT, data, project and business specialists, whether self-employed or running a company. Choose the engagement closest to yours; the label doesn't determine your tax position.

IT contractors & developers A strong day rate does not determine what is available to draw. Payment timing, tax provision and engagement-specific status questions need their own attention. Engagement terms, invoices, bank receipts, business costs and existing tax arrangements. What cash buffer is needed if the next contract starts later?

Data & technical specialists Milestone work can require subscriptions or specialist help before the client accepts delivery. The fees and costs may not arrive in the same month. Milestone schedules, software costs, specialist invoices and unpaid fees. Does the project payment schedule fund the delivery commitments?

Project managers Extensions, breaks and changes of client can alter both cash planning and the questions attached to an engagement. Don't assume the last arrangement carries forward. Current and proposed contracts, invoice terms, regular costs and tax provision. What changes when this engagement ends or the next one begins?

Business consultants Retainers, fixed fees and associate support have different costs. Discuss what taking on help would mean using your existing fees and commitments. Client agreements, recurring fees, associate costs and business commitments. Is taking on help affordable before the extra client income arrives?

This is not a blanket IR35 assessment or a guarantee about employment status. Engagement-specific reviews and specialist requirements need to be discussed and scoped separately. This page does not claim construction or CIS specialism.

Frequently asked questions

Which contractors and consultants do you work with?

Examples include IT contractors, developers, data specialists, project managers, business consultants and independent technical specialists. Our focus is digitally enabled and knowledge-based owners who want proactive accounting. Tell us about your work so we can discuss fit and scope.

Do I have to operate through a limited company?

No. We do not infer your structure from your industry or job title. Self-employed businesses and limited companies have different tax and reporting requirements; we discuss your current arrangements and plans rather than assuming incorporation is the right answer.

Can I ask about IR35 or off-payroll working?

Yes, raise relevant employment-status and off-payroll working questions when discussing your engagement. Their application depends on the facts and the parties involved. We can discuss the advice or specialist review you may need; this page is not an assessment or a guarantee about your status.

Will the calculator automatically add contractor services?

Choose your own services to build a contractor-specific quote. The optional Build for me tool offers broader sector and turnover-based starting suggestions that assume a limited company. Review the services, VAT, payroll and bookkeeping hours before continuing; suggestions do not determine your tax obligations. Your personalised quote appears after you submit your details.

Can you help me plan around gaps between contracts?

Our senior team can discuss outstanding invoices, regular costs and tax provision using your existing figures. Talk through a quieter period or late payment before deciding what to draw. We don't produce custom forecasts or guarantee future contracts.
